Speed limiter calibration
The certificate showing the speed limiter is set and sealed for the vehicle.
This is general information for UK goods-vehicle operators. It is not legal advice. Use the official source on this page, and your operator licence conditions, before you rely on it.
What it is
Many goods vehicles must have a speed limiter fitted and set so the vehicle cannot exceed the legal limit for its type. The limiter is sealed, and an authorised centre issues a calibration plaque or certificate. It is a separate check from the tachograph calibration, even when the same workshop does both.
Who holds it
The operator should hold the speed limiter certificate and be able to show the set speed and the seal details for each vehicle that needs one.
At a visit
DVSA checks that a required limiter is fitted, sealed and not set above the legal speed. A missing certificate or a broken seal is treated as a construction and use failing, and interfering with a limiter is a serious offence.
