4G Vehicle Trackers: What UK Fleets Should Check Before Buying

What UK fleets should check before buying 4G GPS trackers: bands, roaming, coverage and hardware choice, without unsupported network shutdown date guarantees.

This is general guidance for UK transport managers and operators. It does not replace official DVSA or Traffic Commissioner guidance, your operator licence conditions, or legal advice.

“4G tracker” is necessary but not sufficient. Fleets also need honest install paths, plan tiers that match features, and clarity on what happens in weak-signal areas. This guide is a pre-purchase checklist for UK operators.

Why fleets ask for 4G

Older 2G-only modules became harder to support as networks evolve. 4G LTE modules are the mainstream expectation for new professional telematics in the UK. That still leaves work for buyers: confirm the exact modem/bands, SIM profile and fallback behaviour for your vehicles.

Pre-purchase checklist

Before you order

  • Confirm 4G/LTE capability in manufacturer documentation for your region
  • Ask which bands matter for UK (and Ireland/EU if you roam)
  • Understand SIM ownership: platform SIM vs your own
  • Test coverage on real routes — depots, rural roads, ferry ports
  • Decide van compact vs HGV hardwire terminal class
  • Budget professional install labour separately
  • Match plan tier to features you will use (map vs CAN vs remote tacho enquiry)

Coverage varies by operator and location. Use Ofcom’s checker as a starting point, then validate with a pilot vehicle on your worst routes.

How FleetPro’s 4G terminals fit

TerminalCatalogue price (ex VAT)Typical role
FMC003See live catalogue4G OBD plug-and-play — vans / light vehicles
FMC650£89.99HGV-oriented hardwire; CAN/FMS when wired

Plans per tracker per month ex VAT: Essential £6.99, Pro £9.99, HGV + Tacho £14.99. Remote tachograph download remains an intended FMC650 + HGV + Tacho path when available — enquire on remote tachograph download, not a 4G marketing claim.

Beyond the radio: install and power

  • Ignition sense so trips and idle analytics are meaningful
  • Antenna placement away from metal coffins and heated windscreens where possible
  • Fuse protection and tidy loom work from a competent fitter
  • CAN/FMS only when the terminal and plan support it (FMC650 path)

FleetPro recommends professional hardwire for HGV and many van installs and does not sell a bookable installation service.

What to expect in weak-signal areas

Even good 4G trackers buffer or delay updates in tunnels, deep yards and remote valleys. Design operations around eventual consistency: supervisors refresh the map, and critical “last known” positions are treated as last known — not live CCTV.

  • Pilot one vehicle on your worst rural and urban-canyon routes before fleet rollout
  • Train planners that “no update for five minutes” is not always a broken unit
  • Keep depot Wi-Fi myths out of the brief — vehicle telematics rides mobile data
  • Document who chases persistently offline units after overnight park

SIM, roaming and multi-country work

UK-only fleets still need a clear answer on whose SIM sits in the unit and who pays data. Cross-border operators should ask about EU roaming behaviour and whether the same hardware SKU is approved for the countries you enter. Do not assume a UK 4G label equals every continental band.

Questions buyers ask

Are FleetPro trackers 4G?

When does 2G/3G shut down?

We do not publish an unsupported guaranteed shutdown date. Follow mobile-network and regulator announcements for the countries you operate in.

Do I need HGV + Tacho for 4G?

No. 4G connectivity is about the modem. HGV + Tacho is a plan tier intended for remote tachograph download on compatible FMC650 installs when available.

Where do I start?
