Choosing an HGV Tracker: Features That Matter to Transport Managers

Published 19/10/2026 · 4 min read

What transport managers should look for in an HGV GPS tracker: hardwire fit, CAN/FMS, plan tiers, and how remote tachograph download differs from analysis — with FleetPro’s FMC650 focus.

This is general guidance for UK transport managers and operators. It does not replace official DVSA or Traffic Commissioner guidance, your operator licence conditions, or legal advice.

Transport managers do not buy “a GPS”. They buy a reliable location and trip record, optional vehicle-bus signals, and a clear boundary between tracking, file transfer and tachograph analysis. This guide lists features that matter on UK goods vehicles and how FleetPro’s FMC650-centred offer maps to them.

What transport managers actually need

  • Live position and journey history that survive real HGV power cycles
  • Ignition-aware trips so idle and driving are not guesswork
  • Optional CAN/FMS fuel and RPM where the wiring and plan support it
  • Clear separation from drivers’ hours analysis and download deadlines
  • A sober story on remote tachograph download — intended, not oversold

Location does not prove hours compliance. Operators must still download and analyse tachograph data under GOV.UK operator responsibilities. A tracker that only shows the map cannot close that duty.

Why the FMC650 is the HGV-oriented choice

The FMC650 is built as a professional telematics terminal for demanding vehicle installs. In FleetPro Tracking it is the unit we position for rigid and artic work when you want CAN/FMS signals on Pro or HGV plans, and when you may later want remote tachograph download on eligible installs. See FMC650 in the FleetPro shop.

The FMC003 (OBD plug-and-play — see live catalogue pricing) remains valuable for vans and light commercial fleets — compact, 4G, location and behaviour events — but it is not the remote-tacho path. See FMC003 in the FleetPro shop and keep device roles honest across a mixed fleet.

Plan tiers that match HGV features

Plans are per tracker per month ex VAT: Essential £6.99 (live map, trips, basic geofence alerts), Pro £9.99 (behaviour and CAN fuel/RPM on supported FMC650 installs), HGV + Tacho £14.99 (plan intended for remote tachograph file download on compatible FMC650 installs when that service is available).

Remote tachograph download — intended, not finished

Remote download means authorised company-card access to driver cards and the vehicle unit over telematics. FleetPro is preparing this for compatible FMC650 installs on HGV + Tacho. It is educational and enquiry / coming-soon today — not a claim of a finished end-to-end product into tachograph analysis.

Send a compatibility enquiry on remote tachograph download. Meanwhile keep meeting download deadlines manually and import .ddd files with web upload or the Windows Upload Utility on download page (file transfer of already-downloaded data — never the same as remote download). Analysis sits on tachograph compliance and pricing.

Install and wiring expectations

HGV trackers should be hardwired by a competent installer. Tachograph and FMS links need care; a blog article is not a wiring schedule. FleetPro recommends professional fit and does not offer a bookable installation product.

Before you order

  • Confirm vehicle type and whether CAN/FMS is required
  • Choose FMC650 for HGV-oriented work; keep FMC003 for light vehicles
  • Pick the plan tier that matches features you will use this quarter
  • Budget third-party install labour separately
  • If remote download matters later, enquire before promising depot process changes

Keep tracking, transfer and analysis separate

GPS trackingWhere and when the vehicle moved/fleet-tracking
Remote tacho downloadPull files from the tachograph (when available)/remote-tachograph-download
Windows Upload UtilityTransfer .ddd you already hold/download

Buying an HGV tracker for the map is still useful. Just do not treat the map as proof that cards and VUs were downloaded on time.

Questions operators ask

Should every HGV have an FMC650?

Can light trackers such as the FMC003 do remote tachograph download?

No. In our range that capability is intended only for compatible FMC650 installs on HGV + Tacho when available.

Is remote download live into analysis?

Not as a finished end-to-end FleetPro product. Enquire on remote tachograph download.

Do you install the unit?

We recommend professional hardwire fit. FleetPro does not currently sell a bookable installation service.
