How Much Does Fleet Vehicle Tracking Cost in the UK?

This is general guidance for UK transport managers and operators. It does not replace official DVSA or Traffic Commissioner guidance, your operator licence conditions, or legal advice.

Fleet tracking cost is usually misunderstood as “a black box price”. In practice you pay for the terminal, the connectivity/software plan, and (for hardwired jobs) an installer who is not a FleetPro bookable service. This guide works examples with labelled assumptions so you can plug in your own fleet size.
What makes up tracking cost
- Hardware — one terminal per vehicle (or per tracked asset) from the catalogue.
- Plan — monthly fee per tracker for map, trips and plan-tier features.
- Install labour — professional hardwire recommended for HGV; FMC003 vans are OBD plug-and-play when the port is free; you book and pay any fitter separately.
- Optional extras you might already buy elsewhere — tachograph analysis software, compliance modules, or remote download when available (separate from basic GPS).

Worked example: five vans on Essential
Assumptions (labelled): five light vans; one FMC003 each; Essential plan; no FMC650; install labour excluded (self-arranged); 12 months of plans; all figures ex VAT; no VAT calculated.

The FMC003 is OBD plug-and-play on compatible vans. If a port needs an extension or relocate, add your fitter’s quote separately. FleetPro does not publish or book install rates.
Worked example: mixed van and HGV fleet
Assumptions: three vans on FMC003 + Essential; two HGVs on FMC650 + Pro for CAN/behaviour; remote tachograph download not purchased as a finished service (still enquiry / coming soon); install labour excluded; 12 months; all ex VAT.

Costs people forget to budget
Budget checklist
- Professional hardwire labour (third party)
- Workshop time off the road during fitment
- Moving a tracker between vehicles (re-fit labour)
- Tachograph analysis software if you need hours monitoring (separate product)
- Windows Upload Utility workflows for .ddd transfer — free utility, not remote download
- Contingency for failed remote download jobs when that service exists

How to estimate your own fleet
Use this order so the spreadsheet stays honest:
- Count vehicles by type (van vs HGV) and choose FMC003 or FMC650 per type.
- Pick Essential, Pro or HGV + Tacho per vehicle based on features needed — not habit.
- Multiply hardware once; multiply plans by months.
- Add a blank line for install labour from your preferred fitter.
- Keep VAT as a separate column you fill from your own accountant or checkout — do not invent a rate here.

Is install included?
No. Professional hardwire is recommended; FleetPro does not currently offer a bookable installation service.
Does HGV + Tacho mean remote download is live?
HGV + Tacho is the plan intended for remote tachograph download on compatible FMC650 installs when available. Enquire on remote tachograph download rather than assuming a finished end-to-end service into analysis.
