FMC650 for HGV Fleets: Tracking and Remote Tachograph Downloads

Application guide to the FMC650 on UK HGV fleets: hardwire tracking, CAN/FMS, plan tiers, and how remote tachograph download differs from analysis — not a product-page clone.
This is general guidance for UK transport managers and operators. It does not replace official DVSA or Traffic Commissioner guidance, your operator licence conditions, or legal advice.

HGV fleets need a terminal that survives chassis installs, ignition cycles and — where required — vehicle-bus wiring. The FMC650 is how FleetPro positions that job. See the FMC650 in the FleetPro shop. FleetPro practice below maps those capabilities to plans, install expectations and honest boundaries with tachograph compliance.
What the FMC650 is for on an HGV
- Hardwired 4G GNSS location and trip history for rigid and artic work
- Ignition-aware events so idle and driving are not inferred from GPS alone
- CAN/FMS path for fuel, RPM and related signals when correctly wired
- Intended foundation for remote tachograph download on HGV + Tacho when available
It is not a substitute for tachograph analysis software, nor a van plug-in for light commercials. Keep the FMC003 (OBD plug-and-play — see live catalogue pricing) for vans and LCVs — see FMC003 in the FleetPro shop.
Tracking, remote download and analysis are three jobs
| Job | What it does | FleetPro pointer |
|---|---|---|
| GPS / telematics tracking | Where and when the vehicle moved; optional CAN signals | /fleet-tracking |
| Remote tachograph download | Authorised pull of card/VU files when available | /remote-tachograph-download |
| File transfer of held .ddd | Upload data you already downloaded | /download |
| Tachograph analysis | Review hours, gaps and findings | /tachograph-compliance |
Operators must still meet download and monitoring duties described in GOV.UK drivers’ hours guidance and the operator responsibilities guidance. A live map does not prove cards and vehicle units were downloaded on time.
Which plan matches which FMC650 use
Plans are per tracker per month ex VAT. Essential £6.99 covers live map, trips and basic geofence alerts. Pro £9.99 adds behaviour and CAN fuel/RPM on supported wired FMC650 installs. HGV + Tacho £14.99 is the plan intended for remote tachograph file download on compatible FMC650 installs when that service is available.
Remote tachograph downloads — intended, not finished
Remote download means authorised company-card access to driver cards and the vehicle unit over telematics. In FleetPro’s catalogue that path is intended only for compatible FMC650 installs on HGV + Tacho. It is educational and enquiry / coming soon today — not a claim of a finished end-to-end feed into analysis.
Send a compatibility enquiry on remote tachograph download. Meanwhile keep meeting deadlines with your existing download routine and transfer files via web upload or the Windows Upload Utility on download. Analysis sits on tachograph compliance; wider operator compliance tooling is summarised on HGV compliance.
Install and wiring expectations
HGV hardwire, FMS/CAN and any tachograph-linked work should be done by a competent installer. A blog post is not a wiring schedule. FleetPro recommends professional fit and does not sell a bookable installation service.
Before you commit
- Confirm each vehicle needs FMC650 vs a van-class FMC003
- Decide whether CAN/FMS wiring is in scope this quarter
- Pick Essential, Pro or HGV + Tacho based on features you will use
- Budget third-party install labour separately
- If remote download matters, enquire before changing depot process
Mixed fleets: keep device roles honest
Many operators run vans and HGVs together. Put FMC003 units on light vehicles and FMC650 on goods vehicles that need hardwire, CAN or a future remote-tacho path. Mixing roles creates support tickets and false expectations about remote download.
First week after install
Acceptance checks
- Live position updates on the map for each fitted vehicle
- Ignition on/off produces sensible trip starts and ends
- CAN/FMS signals appear only where wiring and plan were scoped
- Supervisors know Essential vs Pro vs HGV + Tacho feature boundaries
- Remote-download expectations documented as enquiry / coming soon if relevant
- Staff told that vehicles are tracked before go-live
If trips look wrong, fix ignition and ground before coaching drivers about idle or harsh events. Bad wiring creates false operations theatre.
Questions transport managers ask
Is this a product page?
Can light trackers such as the FMC003 do remote tachograph download?
No. In our range that capability is intended only for compatible FMC650 installs on HGV + Tacho when available.
Is remote download live into analysis?
Not as a finished end-to-end FleetPro product. Enquire on remote tachograph download.
Do you install the unit?
We recommend professional hardwire fit. FleetPro does not currently sell a bookable installation service.
